When the heart rate is at rest and is lower, the heart is functioning more efficiently. Having a lower heart rate can also help determine cardiovascular fitness. Many professional athletes can have a resting heart rate of 40 beats per minute, which is indeed exceptionally low but reflects their intense cardiovascular-focused exercise program.

When I first began my walking program, my average resting heart rate ranged from 89 to a surprisingly dismal 95. After one year of gardening whenever I was able and walking daily, my resting heart rate improved to about 69 to 75 beats per minute. That’s good progress made with moderate exercise.

An advantage of walking regularly is that it is convenient and free. You do not have to buy into an expensive health club to exercise for 20 or 30 minutes every day. Instead, you can step right outside your front door and achieve excellent results. Exercising out in nature gives you energy and lifts your spirits as well.
